High Friction Surface Treatments on I-75
Throughout the project corridor there are multiple areas where we have added an additional layer of safety, called a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST). This treatment is applied directly to the roadway to improve pavement friction along specific curves as a safety measure. HFST is used throughout the country and has proven to be effective. A couple locations where this layer of safety has been applied on the roadway is on I-75 at the Big Beaver Road curves and th e 9 Mile Ro ad c urves. Drivers notice only a minimal difference in the feel of the road as they travel through these areas, however the roadway surface visually stands out as the treatment can change the color of the roadway – as illustrated in the image below.

I-75 Modernization Project Seasonal Suspension
The I -75 Modernization Project is pleased to announce the reopening of lanes and ramps following the 2021 construction season. The freeway has been restored to three lanes in each direction and the ramps between 8 Mile Road and Square Lake Road have reopened for the winter months.
This season has had some amazing milestones , such as the:
- Rebuilding of the southbound travel lanes and ramps between 8 Mile and I-696
- Rebuilding of the Browning, Highland, and Bellaire Avenue Pedestrian bridges
- Rebuilding and reopening of the 11 Mile Bridge as well as the Shevlin Avenue Bridge (which will reopen later this year), and the SB I-75 bridge over 13 Mile Road
- Opening of two reconfigured interchanges at Big Beaver Road and 14 Mile Roads making them safer.
Crews will continue work along the southbound and northbound service drives through the winter.
The 2022 c onstruction season will kick off in late February and will focus on the northbound lanes/ramps from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road. Stay tuned to the project website and social media channels for more info.

Vegetation planting begins October 23 on I-75 in Oakland County
Weather permitting, landscaping crews will begin vegetation planting along I-75 in Oakland County during the months of October, November, and December. For healthy planting sustainability, additional work will take place in the spring. The plantings will occur approximately along the 8-mile stretch of I-75 between Coolidge Highway and 14 Mile Rd. The plantings are part of the freeway modernization project that reconstructed a section of I-75 during the 2019 and 2020 construction seasons. In order to safely unload equipment and vegetation, there will be intermittent shoulder and single-lane closures along northbound and southbound I-75 during non-peak travel hours.
